Dexter has not yet learnt to ride a scooter, though he is very keen! He’s had a go of his older brother and sister’s ones and really enjoyed it but they are much too big for him so it usually ends up with me pulling him along most of the way.
He’s two and a half so I was really intrigued to see how he would get on with the Oxelo B1 Scooter from Decathlon. It’s designed for 2 to 4 year olds and has a patented steering system that turns the front wheels whilst simultaneously tilting the deck at the right angle, so that the scooter goes in the right direction. I remember from my older kids learning that steering was the hardest thing for them to master – they could usually get the speed up well but direction took on a life of it’s own! Dexter is tall for his age too so sits quite nicely in the age range it’s aimed at.
The scooter arrived well packaged and was really easy to put together. It is a lovely bright blue, though comes in a range of colours – you actually purchase the deck separately from the scooter, and as these are just £2 each you could have a different colour for every season if you fancied it! Dexter was super excited to see the scooter put together and couldn’t wait to have a go. At first it was slow progress but that was mainly a mix of nerves and overzealousness! The steering is definitely easier than on a lot of scooters and it feels really nice and steady.
He’s still learning on it and I’m not always brave enough to do a whole school run with him on the scooter but it’s much easier for him than most other scooters would be. He can pick up some speed, can steer and doesn’t usually crash! Most importantly though, he has never fallen off, which is great for these early days!
At just £22.99 the Oxelo B1 is amazing value, it feels a similar quality to my daughter’s much more expensive scooter and has a similar smooth look. In comparison, my eldest’s scooter (which he has had since he was four) was a similar price and is the wobbliest, rattliest thing you could possibly get around on, so to be able to get something of this quality for such a low price is fantastic.
