LOGO: What Am I? is a children’s version of the LOGO game. It’s a similar concept: answer questions based on familiar products and their logos, packaging etc. but made in a way that is much simpler and easier for kids. The types of questions are straightforward – guessing, describing and drawing, gameplay is fairly straightforward (though with a slightly complicated end which I think is designed to make it a bit nicer by having two winners but I felt made it a little strange!).
My kids are 5 and 3 which is under the recommended age for the game, but they do love a board game so I thought we’d give it a go. My daughter was somewhat hindered by not being able to read and needed help with a lot of her clues, though was able to recognise a lot of the pictures so still enjoyed playing. My son really enjoyed it and found it quite funny seeing products he liked popping up on the cards. They both understood what they had to do and were able to play the game, and as they are quite competitive, they really got into it.
The one thing they had trouble with was the fact that they didn’t recognise a lot of products. Of course, they knew most of the confectionery items, and a lot of the snacks, but they just didn’t know a lot of brands. I’m actually quite pleased about this and am thinking that those occasions of choosing CBeebies over kids’ channels with ads may have paid off! This is certainly not a criticism of the game as they were all pretty well known, just that my two didn’t know them. As well as brands there are plenty of other, more generic items to guess such as ‘strawberries’ and it really didn’t hold the game up too much, it just meant that I sometimes had to hold the card up to them first and say ‘do you know what that is?’.
All in all, an enjoyable family game. Lasts a decent amount of time but doesn’t get boring, and the kids really enjoyed it, especially the drawing rounds (am thinking Pictionary could be our next purchase!). As they get older and more ad-aware I think they will enjoy it even more.
