Many parents-to-be like to refer to their growing baby with a nickname rather than just calling it ‘Bump’ or ‘Baby’ or ‘It’. It is not a silly or foolish thing to do as it may help you to bond with your baby but it is also not a requirement to name your bump and many parents do not name their unborn baby.
Some parents decide on a nickname as it refers to something they have read regarding their baby, for example ‘Pip’ or ‘Beanie’ may be chosen as they refer to a size comparison of your growing baby. Some bumps may be named after a food that the expectant mum is craving such as ‘Satsuma’ or ‘Apple’. While other growing babies may be named after the first scan photo such as ‘Smudge’. It also does not need to be a real word. There is no right or wrong when it comes to naming your bump and there is no need to use the name in public if you would prefer to keep it private.
